Les Eyre feeling so good as he celebrates first treble of 30-year career

Les Eyre was still celebrating on Thursday morning after recording the first treble of his 30-year career the previous day.

The Yorkshire trainer sent out a double at his local track Beverley in the afternoon, courtesy of stable stalwarts Make On Madam and El Principe, and brought up the notable landmark when Sandra’s Secret scored at Ripon’s evening meeting under champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa.

“You’ve no idea how good it feels,” said Eyre, whose first season with a licence was in the 1989-90 jumps campaign. “It’s a huge tribute to the staff we’ve got – they’re key – and our loyal owners.

“We have only 22 horses, but the stable is in tremendous form. Everything we send out at the moment I feel has got an each-way chance.”

Eyre, who spent more than 12 years training in Spain, where he saddled a Derby third, added: “We have had plenty of good days during the 30 years. We won the Ebor in 1997 with Far Ahead for Sandra’s Secret’s owners, and landed the biggest handicap in Spain.

“Sandra’s Secret cost only £20,000, Make On Madam was bought for £5,000, and El Principe is a homebred.

“We’ve got other nice horses, including Dawaaleeb, who has won at Newcastle and Beverley since joining us. He’s very quirky but ultra talented. If I can get his head right there's a big one in him.”
