When riders disagree: three other fallouts between weighing room colleagues

On the back of Raul da Silva receiving a 21-day ban for striking Jim Crowley at Goodwood on Sunday, we look back at previous incidents involving warring jockeys . . .

Calvin Borel and Javier Castellano

Borel and Castellano came to blows after the Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Churchill Downs in 2010. Castellano's riding upset Borel during the race and after weighing in he confronted his rival in the winner's circle, shouting: "I'm going to kill you" before being restrained. Castellano then threw a punch at Borel, who was restrained. Borel then broke free and threw several punches at Castellano. Stewards fined both jockeys and gave Castellano a six-day ban for rough riding.

Kieren Fallon and Stuart Webster

Fallon and Webster famously clashed at Beverley in 1994 in an incident which resulted in Fallon pulling Webster off his horse after they had passed the winning line. Fallon, who was incensed after the pair clashed mid-race, received a six-month ban for violent and improper conduct.

The Beverley clash was the first in what would become a controversial career for six-time champion jockey Fallon, who was cleared of race-fixing after standing trial at the Old Bailey, as well as receiving two bans for failing drug tests.

Dominic Elsworth and Timmy Murphy

Murphy was banned for nine days after a dust-up with fellow rider Dominic Elsworth at Newbury in 2013. Stewards banned Murphy, who dislocated his shoulder in the incident, after finding he was "the main instigator and the main protagonist in the altercation".
