Veteran Pete The Feat could race again after early tumble in planned swansong

Retirement plans for popular chaser Pete The Feat could be put on hold after his early exit in the Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown on Friday.

The 15-year-old gelding, who fell at the fourth fence, seemed unperturbed by his early departure and showed his wellbeing when running loose and leading home eventual winner Le Reve – albeit without rider Major Harry Wallace.

Trainer Charlie Longsdon confirmed the veteran chaser was unscathed and enjoying some time out in the paddock.

Longsdon said: "He's fine and is out in the field. It was potentially going to be his final race but we're not quite sure where we stand right now. It could be his final run but we could also find another race for him to bow out in."

The trainer added: "He ran on in front of the runners; it's the way he rolls."

Pete The Feat has won 12 of his 67 races, including the 2017 veterans' final at the age of 13, and also finished runner-up behind the now-retired Buywise last year.

There was a sad postscript to the Grand Military Gold Cup as Carlos Du Fruitier, who was pulled up before the last, died as a result of injuries sustained.

Trainer Ben Pauling released the news on Twitter, saying: "I'm very sad to report that Carlos Du Fruitier didn't make it through the night. He was a legend with so much character. Thank you to the vets at Sandown for their superb care. His owners The Sanbaggers adored him and our thoughts are with them and his lad."
