Dual Grade 1-winning chaser Djakadam, who finished second twice in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, has been retired after suffering a hock injury in the Grande Steeple-Chase de Paris at Auteuil last month.

The winner of seven races, five of them over fences, he achieved his Grade 1 wins in the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown in 2015 and 2016.

The nine-year-old, who carried the colours of Rich and Susannah Ricci, ran in the Cheltenham Gold Cup four times. He finished runner-up to Coneygree in 2015 and was second to Don Cossack in the race a year later. He finished fourth in the 2017 running and fifth this year.

Speaking on Wednesday morning, his trainer Willie Mullins said: "Djakadam came back from Auteuil with an injury. He slipped the tendon off a hock and we've decided to retire him.

"He was a good servant to the yard and was a very consistent performer who performed so well in many top level races."

In addition to his two Grade 1 victories, Djakadam finished in the first three in ten other Grade 1 chases, most recently when beaten three-quarters of a length by stablemate Bellshill in the Coral Punchestown Gold Cup in April.

A son of Saint-Des-Saints, Djakadam won the Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase at Gowran Park by eight lengths in 2015.

Mullins added: "He'll be going back to France to spend his retirement with his breeder Richard Corveller."
