Tregoning readying Greenham winner Mohaather for QEII tilt on Champions Day

Greenham winner Mohaather is being lined up to return from six months out in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot.

The one-time 2,000 Guineas hope has been out of action since his April success at Newbury, but is back in full work after sustaining an injury.

Last year's Horris Hill winner, owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum, is a dual Group 3 scorer and has been successful on three of his four starts. He is a general 25-1 chance to strike on his first attempt at top-level company on October 19.

Trainer Marcus Tregoning said: “The plan is to get him ready for Ascot as hopefully the ground will have eased up a bit by then. He’s in full work and pleasing us.

“He’d been going the right way and the Greenham form has worked out well. It looked like a mile would be in his grasp but we’ll find out on Champions Day all being well.

“He had a significant injury when he ran in the Greenham but he’s a horse we’ve always liked – we were thinking of running him in the Guineas earlier in the year.”

The Whitsbury trainer has been operating at an 18 per cent strike-rate this year, enjoying 17 winners from 93 runners, including two winners and five other first-three placings from nine runners in the past fortnight.

Tregoning said: “The horses have been running well all year but it’s a numbers game and we’re looking forward to getting some more ammunition in the future.

“Horses like Mohaather are a great vehicle for attracting new interest and if he runs a very big race we may get some more.”

Exciting juvenile Impressor could provide the Derby-winning trainer with big-race success on Saturday when contesting the Dubai Duty Free-sponsored Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury.

Impressor caught the eye when fourth on his debut at Glorious Goodwood before winning convincingly at Salisbury next time. He is a general 8-1 shot for the Group 2 event, in which Mums Tipple has been taken out, but Richard Hannon could still be represented with Mystery Power, Oh Purple Reign and Temple Of Heaven.

Tregoning said: “He won nicely at Salisbury last time having ran well on his debut at Goodwood and has plenty of speed.

“We entered him in the Champagne Stakes, where I’m sure he'd have gone well, but we decided to stick to six furlongs and he’ll run at the weekend.

"I’m hoping he’ll run a big race – conditions are likely to be different to Salisbury as I’m anticipating quick ground, but most of the Footstepsinthesand progeny I’ve had have gone on fast ground, so hopefully he'll be fine.”

The similarly Rupert Villers-owned Power Of Darkness, successful on three of his five handicap starts including most recently in the Shergar Cup Mile, has been taken out of the bet365 Cambridgeshire after a small setback and will return in the spring.
