Teddy Grimthorpe becomes Imad Al Sagar's new racing manager

Teddy Grimthorpe has been revealed as the new racing manager for owner Imad Al Sagar, who will also continue to retain the services of jockeys Hollie Doyle and Martin Dwyer in 2022.

Grimthorpe, 67, was the public face of the late Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte operation before stepping down as racing manager in June having held the role for 22 years, during which time the likes of Frankel and Enable carried the owner’s distinctive green, pink and white silks.

Since leaving Juddmonte, Grimthorpe has been appointed chairman of the National Stud in Newmarket, as well as sitting on the board of the National Stud’s owner, the Jockey Club, and of York racecourse. He begins his new role next month.

He said: “I am very touched to have been asked by Imad Al Sagar to join his team. He has built up an impressive bloodstock portfolio and I will look forward to being any help I can with his operation.”

Joint-owner of 2007 Derby winner Authorized and 2006 Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Araafa, Al Sagar has continued to breed and race horses in Britain after his partner, Saleh Al Homaizi, stepped away from the operation in 2018.

Al Sagar, who operates Blue Diamond Stud near Newmarket, raced 22 individual horses for eight trainers in Britain last year, headlined by Group 3 Firth of Clyde Stakes winner Nazanin.

She was partnered to that victory by Hollie Doyle, who said she was “delighted to be teaming up” with the owner for a third year. Dwyer, who was appointed second jockey to Al Sagar last summer, will also continue in the role for 2022.

Grimthorpe replaces Tony Nerses, who was revealed in the Racing Post’s Front Runner on Thursday to have left his position as racing manager for Al Sagar after 20 years.

Al Sagar said: “We have taken the opportunity to restructure our team for 2022 and are delighted to welcome Teddy as racing manager. Tony Nerses was a major contributor to our growth and success and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Ted Voute has been appointed interim chief executive at Blue Diamond Stud, with Gerry Meehan joining as yearling manager and Nancy Sexton named bloodstock and media adviser.
