Sound Angela
Fourth, Newmarket, Wednesday

As far as Newmarket novice events go, the one won by Indy Moon last week won't go down as one of the classiest events ever staged at the Suffolk track.

But there was no mistaking the promise of Roger Varian's Sound Angela, who shaped better than her finishing position on this racecourse debut.

A £26,000 yearling purchase, this half-sister to a couple of winners from 6f-1m1f forfeited a fair bit of ground at the start and was green when asked for an effort, but she stuck to her task in the last quarter mile to finish fourth.

She's sure to come on a fair bit for that experience and, although she'll have to raise her game against the better types in novice company, she'll be one to take into ordinary handicap company in due course. [Richard Young]

New London
First, Newmarket, Wednesday

Although the likely market leader Al Nafir was an absentee due to substantial overnight rain that changed the ground to soft (from good to firm), the Charlie Appleby stable had an able deputy in New London, who created a pleasing impression on his debut.

This brother to 7f Listed winner Al Dabaran and half-brother to a 6f-1m scorer looks to have a fair bit more in the way of stamina than either of those relatives and he made up plenty of ground without being knocked about to assert in the closing stages.

He's an imposing sort – just the type who will train on to make up into a smart three-year-old next season – and, given his pedigree, he should be fully effective over 1m4f and further. He's open to bags of improvement and appeals strongly as the type to hold his own in better company. [Richard Young]

Dino Boy
Second, Carlisle, Thursday

For a horse who won over 4m in soft ground at Kelso at the end of last year, Dino Boy deserves plenty of credit for getting as close as he did to Kilbrook, an embryonic chaser who could take higher rank over fences, over 2m4f on good ground last week.

His jumping was sound in the main and he stuck to his task like a terrier in the closing stages, going down by only the minimum margin. Although he may be a shade flattered by his proximity given the winner wasn't doing a tap in front, this effort was still on a par with the pick of his form over fences.

He'll be suited by the return to 3m and beyond when there's a fair bit more cut in the ground and he's the type to win a decent staying handicap this season. The Eider at Newcastle in February before another tilt at the Scottish National could be the plan. [Richard Young]

Loudspeaker
Fifth, Wolverhampton, Thursday

Michael Bell's runner kept on from the rear in a steadily run race in which the first four finishers raced one-two-three-four for much of the way.

He has a good pedigree for middle distances on the dam's side and, now qualified for a mark, can improve when upped in trip in handicaps.

It may also be worth keeping in mind he showed a knee action that suggests he'll want slow ground on turf. [Ron Wood]

Virtuoso
Sixth, Newbury, Friday

Andrew Balding's filly was detached from the main group with just over two furlongs to run in a Newbury maiden on her debut, but she ran on late to finish much closer than had looked likely, sixth of the 12 runners.

The first foal of a useful 6f-7f winner for the same trainer, she could improve bundles over time. [Ron Wood]
