Shane Kelly 'bruised and shaken' but escapes injury after shocking Brighton fall

Jockey Shane Kelly will face only a short spell on the sidelines after escaping with no serious injuries following a horrific fall at Brighton on Tuesday evening.

Kelly was taken by ambulance to Royal Sussex County Hospital after the Evan Williams-trained Finvarra fell and was fatally injured during a division of the mile handicap.

Luckily for Kelly, only a concussion test stands between him and a return to the racecourse after he was released from hospital the same evening.

He said on Wednesday: "Everything is a little bruised and shaken, but nothing appears to be broken and I need to have a concussion test in little over a week. I'm looking forward to getting the green light, so hopefully I can pass and get back.

"It was tragic what happened to Finvarra, it's the tough bit of our game, especially for Evan and his team."

Kelly credited those who came to his aid on Tuesday, including BHA chief medical adviser Dr Jerry Hill and a welcome overnight stay at trainer Gary Moore’s family residence.

"I was extremely well looked after in Brighton by all the medical team and doctors at the course, and Jerry Hill helped last night and this morning too," he added.

"Hayley Moore, Gary's daughter, came and picked me up from the hospital and I stayed in Gary's house last night so I'm grateful to them as well."

Kelly will be eager to return to the course following a successful season that has featured his first Royal Ascot winner on Rohaan, who he also partnered to victory in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes success in May.

The three-year-old has an entry at Goodwood in the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes at the end of the month, where he could take on Battaash.

He said: "Please God I'll be back for Rohaan, so fingers crossed."
