Sea Of Class shows Classic qualities with easy Listed win at Newbury

The Investec Oaks may have come too soon for Sea Of Class but she appears to have all the qualities of a future Classic contender following an impressive victory in the Listed Johnnie Lewis Memorial British EBF Stakes at Newbury.

The daughter of Sea The Stars, who races for the Tsui family, recorded back-to-back wins at the Berkshire track under James Doyle, quickening up under a hands and heels ride to win by two lengths.

Ridden with confidence, the William Haggas-trained Sea Of Class eased into contention inside the final three furlongs, going upsides Princess Yaiza with just over a furlong to run and quickening to the front in the closing stages.

David Simcock's Mrs Sippy, a Doncaster maiden winner last year, fared best of the rest on her return to finish second with Princess Yaiza three-quarters of a length back in third.

The Darley Irish Oaks, Juddmonte Pretty Polly Stakes and Qatar Nassau Stakes are among options for the high-class filly.

Haggas said: "I'm glad we didn't run in the Oaks and this is another step forward. We're going to come to the stage now where we're going to go a bit bolder.

"I've got to talk to Mrs Tsui and it's whether we keep her at a mile and a quarter. It'll either be the Pretty Polly and the Nassau or the Irish Oaks I suspect.

"We'll either keep her at a mile and a quarter and go for the Pretty Polly and Nassau or we'll go up to a mile and a half, which she'll get no problem."

This 1m2f contest, registered as The Abingdon Stakes, has a rich recent honour roll with subsequent Irish Oaks winner Great Heavens and dual Group 1 winner Speedy Boarding landing the £50,000 prize.
