Roger Varian's Carlburg Stables in Newmarket is mourning the passing of classy stayer Fujaira Prince, who suffered a fatal injury during exercise on Wednesday morning.

At the time of his injury, the seven-year-old had been preparing for Saturday’s Group 2 Long Distance Cup at Ascot, for which he was an 8-1 chance.

The son of Pivotal was the winner of five of his 12 races and over £300,000 in prize-money and was in his pomp only last year when he won the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot before justifying favouritism in the Ebor Handicap at York.

Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, Fujaira Prince then narrowly missed out on Classic glory when finishing runner-up in the Group 1 Irish St. Leger before he was third to Trueshan on Champions Day a year ago.The grey was known by his nickname 'George' by all at Carlburg Stables.

Varian said: "Fujaira Prince was a lovely horse who has given us many special moments, the highlight of those being his success the Ebor in 2020."

He added: "He will be much missed by the whole team here at Varian Stable, in particular by his groom Alan Rutter, his work-rider Chiara Careddu, barn manager Dee Deacon, and of course by his owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum."
