Poetic Flare odds-on for Sussex as Glorious Goodwood day two fields take shape

Poetic Flare is odds-on to land his third Group 1 in the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood as the field narrowed to 12 entries for next week's race.

The 2,000 Guineas winner's price shortened following John Gosden's announcement that a blood disorder had ruled Palace Pier out of the much-anticipated clash on Wednesday.

Poetic Flare is 4-6 with bookmakers after the Sussex Stakes confirmation stage as he attempts to follow up his Royal Ascot success with another Group 1 victory.

Palace Pier's absence makes the Sussex Stakes a more attractive offering for those with multiple entries at Glorious Goodwood, with some fillies entered likely bound for the Nassau Stakes on Thursday.

Coronation Stakes winner Alcohol Free, who finished third behind Snow Lantern in the Falmouth Stakes, has no Nassau entry and is second choice with some firms around the 6-1 mark for the Sussex.

Goodwood day two entries

Aidan O'Brien has four runners in the frame for the mile contest, including Order Of Australia and Lope Y Fernandez, who will be another seeking to benefit from the absence of Palace Pier after finishing second in the Queen Anne last time.

Juddmonte's leading fancy Tilsit was a winner two weeks ago in the Summer Mile at Ascot, and the four-year-old notched a Group 3 victory over the distance at Goodwood last year for trainer Charlie Hills.

Day two of Goodwood features two Group 3s before the Sussex, with the entries for the Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes including Summer Stakes winner Light Refrain and Hackwood Stakes scorer Happy Romance.

That race is followed by the two-year-old Markel Molecomb Stakes with Chipotle, a disappointing favourite in the Super Sprint last week, among the possibles.
