One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday

One trainer

Mark Johnston will continue to be a name on the lips of many as he remains in touching distance of becoming the winningmost trainer in the history of British racing.

The elusive victory number 4,194, which would see him surpass Richard Hannon snr in the record books, has remained four wins away since Sunday and, in addition to his quartet of runners late on Friday (two in the same race), the 58-year-old has another nine chances on Saturday.

The Trader is the only one of Johnston's team to run in Listed or Group company on Saturday, although he will have the assistance of Ryan Moore in the saddle in the Denford Stakes at Newbury (1.50). Winged Spur (4.40) is the trainer's only other runner at the Berkshire course, but he has plenty of chances elsewhere.

Newmarket's meeting sees Parliament House (2.10), Sofia's Rock (4.30) and Rastacap (5.35) try and do their bit for the record attempt, and he has another three runners at Doncaster with Quintada (2.15), Tight Lines (4.35) and X Rated (5.05).

There's no such companionship for Dr Richard Kimble (5.00), who goes solo for Johnston at Ripon.

One jockey

It may be seen as one of the quieter Saturdays of the Flat summer, but it will prove to be anything but quiet for bookmakers if Ryan Moore goes on a run of winning rides at Newbury.

Moore has six rides on the card and all appear to have a reasonable chance of success, starting with the aforementioned The Trader for Johnston.

He then teams up with William Haggas as Dai Harraild returns to a more suitable level in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2.25) after a respectable fourth in the Goodwood Cup, before his ride on course and distance winner Rogue (3.00).

Moore rides favourite Gustav Klimt in the big race of the afternoon, the Group 2 Ladyswood Stud Hungerford Stakes (3.35), before teaming up with his old mentor Sir Michael Stoute for his final two rides, the Queen's Sextant (4.10) and Hidden Depths (4.40), both of whom finished second in their previous race.

One horse

Charlie Appleby's Hamada is having only his first attempt in Group company on Saturday at Newbury (2.25), but his seven-length triumph in a Newmarket handicap at the July meeting outlined the four-year-old gelding as a horse of massive potential.

He remains among the market leaders for next week's £500,000 Ebor, but connections have already stated he could be a potential Melbourne Cup candidate. A first win in Group company would be a big step towards revealing how realistic those ambitions are.

One race

It's not often the Saturday limelight falls on Ripon, but the Yorkshire track does get its fair share of terrestrial coverage this weekend, with the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap (3.15) taking centre stage.

Such is the competitiveness of the £75,000 handicap, some bookmakers are going 8-1 the field, with Richard Fahey's Growl the current favourite.

The 20-runner six-furlong sprint is also supplemented by a consolation race (2.05), although that is a tad easier for punters to decipher with just the 15 runners by comparison.
