One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Thursday
Trainer
Mark Johnston tends to target the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes (3.00) each year, and won it recently with Elarqam (2017) and Arctic Sound (2018). The trainer relies on Qaader in the feature race at Newmarket on Thursday.
The son of Night Of Thunder was second in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and has shaped well in two more runs at Group 2 level. However, he may need to find a bit more here as this looks a warm contest.
The Johnston team also have another leading chance at Newmarket with Mildenberger, who sets the standard in the Listed Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes (3.35).
Britain's winningmost trainer is also represented by the aforementioned Arctic Sound in the 2.05 at Pontefract, Auchterarder in the 2.25 at Newmarket and Frankel's Storm in the 2.40 at Pontefract, races which form part of the ITV4 coverage.
Jockey
William Buick gears up for a big weekend with some well-fancied rides, including partnering the exciting La Barrosa, who puts his lofty reputation on the line in the Tattersalls Stakes (3.00).
The two-year-old cost 750,000gns as a yearling and made a sparkling debut at Ascot. Perhaps La Barrosa will throw his name into the Classic reckoning with a big performance at Newmarket.
Buick also partners Ebor disappointment Ghostwatch in the Rose Bowl Stakes (3.35), while Toromona (1.15), Flippa The Strippa (2.25), Grand Bazaar (4.10), First Winter (4.45) and Bottom Bay (5.20) complete a strong book of rides.
Horse
Many believed Not So Sleepy could reach Champion Hurdle standard after his two emphatic wins at Ascot last season and, while he did not quite fire at Cheltenham, it will be interesting to see what he can achieve now tested on the Flat.
The Hughie Morrison-trained eight-year-old makes his first Flat start since his Cesarewitch fourth in the William Hill Lengthen #YourOdds Handicap (2.40) at Pontefract. He looks to take advantage of a mark of 94, while a drop in trip to 1m4f is interesting.
Race
The Rossdales EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes (1.15) has an impressive roll of honour in recent years with Telescope, Eminent and Ghaiyyath winning this before going on to make an impact at Group level.
This year's field is packed with promising types with Royal Champion, Keeper and Vitruve boasting impressive pedigrees. Toromona is the one to beat on form, having finished second on his debut.
