Magical retains top spot in the Cartier Horse of the Year classification after Enable's failed bid for a historic hat-trick in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday.

The John Gosden-trained mare, who remains second in the rankings, was defeated by the Andre Fabre-trained Waldgeist in Paris, who leaps up to fourth after giving his trainer a record eighth success in Europe's premier middle-distance race.

Connections have left the door ajar for Enable to make another appearance this season, either on Champions Day at Ascot or at the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita, and the daughter of Nathaniel would have to win to keep alive her bid for a second success in Cartier's premier category.

Magical, Enable, Stradivarius and Waldgeist now hold the top four spots for both the horse of the year and older horse awards.

Earthlight's victory in the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket keeps the son of Shamardal as the top two-year-old colt, although Pinatubo's impending appearance in Saturday's Darley Dewhurst Stakes could bring about change in the category.

In the sprinting division, dual Royal Ascot hero Blue Point remains at the head after Battaash's disappointing run in Sunday's Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp, won by the the improving Glass Slippers.

The Kevin Ryan-trained winner now sits just outside in the top five behind Longchamp runner-up So Perfect, Hello Youmzain and the Martyn Meade-trained Advertise, the current 3-1 favourite for the Champions Sprint at Ascot on October 19.

The awards, established in 1991, will be presented in London on the evening of Tuesday, November 12.
