Going update: testing conditions for final day

The ground at Ascot is soft, heavy (in places) following a total 44mm of rain falling on the track since Friday.

At 6pm on Friday, clerk of the course Chris Stickels said yesterday's deluge was almost certainly a record for Royal Ascot after the first three days of the meeting were run on good to firm.

Market movers: Broomethe new Harwicke favoutire

Punters have thrown their support behind Hardwicke Stakes (3.40) hope Broome this morning, with the five-year-old backed into 7-2 favourite (from 9-2).

Broome was vying for favouritism in the Group 2 with fillies Wonderful Tonight and Albaflora, both of whom have seen their prices tumble over the last 24 hours due to their proficiency on soft ground.

Two days ago, Wonderful Tonight was available at 10-1 but is now a general 4-1, with Albaflora clipped into 5-1 from 16-1 over the same period. Wonderful Tonight was the 7-2 overnight market leader but has been weak this morning.

In the same race, the William Haggas-trained Ilaraab has also been well supported and is into a general 4-1 (from 6-1).

Paddy Power market movers

2.30 Great Max 10-1 (from 12)
3.05 New Mandate 18-1 (from 22)
3.40 Broome 7-2 fav (from 4)
4.20 Art Power 9-2 (from 6)
5.00 Kings Lynn 100-30 fav (from 9-2)
5.35 Seasett 5-1 (from 11-2)
6.10 Falcon Eight 100-30 fav (from 7-2 fav)

Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield said: "Broome suffered his first defeat of the season in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, but punters seem to be forgiving him that in no uncertain terms in the Hardwicke Stakes.

"Backers are also putting their faith in Art Power in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes despite his not yet having struck a blow at the highest level after dotting up in a handicap at last year’s Royal extravaganza."

Top stories: Commonwealth Cup fallout

The big story on Friday at Royal Ascot was the dramatic stewards' inquiry which led to Campanelle being awarded the Commonwealth Cup.

Frankie Dettori told reporters Dragon Symbol and Oisin Murphy had "drifted about eight lanes" in the closing stages of the 6f Group 1 resulting in them finishing first past the post by a head.

Read the full race report report here for full reaction from winning connections, while three Racing Post experts also cast their eyes over the incident.
