Jersey issues cash call after Covid-19 wipes out entire year's racing

The Jersey Race Club has issued a desperate plea for financial help and established a crowdfunding page after Covid-19 wiped out its entire programme this year and cost it an estimated 80 per cent of its income.

With no revenue from media rights or levy grants, racing at Les Landes depends primarily on attendance for its survival.

Although it has been going on for more than 150 years, it exists on something of a hand-to-mouth basis at the best of times. The situation can seldom have been more precarious than it is now.

Its nine meetings a year – each comprising four Flat races and a hurdle which attracts average crowds of around 2,000 – have been likened by some to point-to-pointing, but although the racing itself might be low on quality, its many fans insist it is high on charm.

It is one of the island’s main spectator sports, contributing about £1 million to the local economy every year, and although there will be no racing until Easter Monday at the earliest, the Les Landes track requires maintenance throughout in preparation, so money is needed urgently.

Andy Cadoret, the race club secretary, said: "We need to raise £100,000. We are seeking £50,000 through the crowdfunding page, and we've got other fundraising going on, including asking our 200 or so members to pay next year's fees early and setting up a patrons' fund for larger donations.

"We are optimistic that we will reach our target, but it may take some time. Every penny counts, so please give as much or as little as you can if you want horseracing to continue in Jersey."

He urges those wishing to help secure the future of racing in Jersey to donate here and forward the link to friends and family.

Racecourse commentator Mark Johnson has been calling the horses there regularly for the last 29 years and is the outgoing president of the race club committee.

He said: "Jersey offers a unique racing experience and it would be a great loss to the racing community on the island, and in particular to the dedicated group who work so hard to make it happen, as well as to the owners, trainers and riders both in Jersey and on the mainland who support it so enthusiastically."
