Jamie Spencer facing spell on sidelines after fracturing a hip in gallops fall
Jamie Spencer revealed on Friday evening he broke his hip in an accident on the gallops in Newmarket.
He was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge after the fall, which occurred while he was riding out for trainer David Simcock.
The jockey, 39, said: "It's not good. My hip is broken."
Reflecting on the incident, Simcock said earlier: "It was one of those unfortunate things. A horse was walking along and slipped.
"It looked a very innocuous fall – my wife saw it happen and she said it was like slow motion – but he landed all wrong. We're so conscious of horses getting fresh and this happened after exercise and he couldn't have been quieter.
"Jamie was in a lot of pain but he was always in good spirits."
Spencer rode in Dubai and Hong Kong in the winter and also won a valuable race at Moonee Valley in Australia on Chief Ironside for David Menuisier.
He had ridden five winners from just 17 rides on the all-weather in Britain in 2020 and was looking forward to the delayed start of the turf season, which is on pending the resumption of racing after the coronavirus shutdown.
