In-running bedlam at Redcar as Avior Star hits 1.01 but loses out by a nose
A season full of dramatic shocks continued at Redcar on Wednesday after Avior Star threw away his chance when clear deep inside the final furlong to leave in-running supporters ruing their luck in the 6f nursery.
A total of £8,902 was traded at 1.01 on the Phillip Makin-trained second on Betfair, while £9 was traded at 130 on the winner Enderman, trained by Paul Midgley.
Ridden by Graham Lee, Enderman exploited a lapse in concentration from the long-time leader who showed greenness and hung badly when around three lengths clear in the closing exchanges. Lee took his opportunity to pounce on the far side and produced Enderman to score by a nose.
The winner had failed to trouble the judge on his previous three starts and was making his first start after a gelding operation last month, a move which clearly paid dividends.
Avior Star, however, was adjudged to have wandered "around like a shopping trolley" by the racecourse commentator Darren Owen.
The unfortunate runner-up shaped well on his handicap debut when third of 19 at Thirsk nine days earlier and on this evidence his turn will not be far away, providing he concentrates better.
