'I shouldn't have done it' - Frankie Dettori's regret over Ascot outburst

Frankie Dettori has admitted his regret over labelling fellow rider Dylan Browne McMonagle a "disgrace" in an angry outburst that followed Stradivarius's defeat at Ascot on Champions Day last month.

A film of Dettori's life, titled 'Dettori: Show Me How Good You Are', is available to buy, download or watch in selected cinemas from Monday and the rider discusses many of the themes, including the fallout from his cocaine ban and battle with bulimia, in an exclusive interview in Sunday's Racing Post.

Yet more recent events have kept the three-time champion jockey in the headlines, notably the incident on Champions Day when he reacted furiously to Browne McMonagle's tactics on Baron Samedi in the Long Distance Cup.

"Listen, I lost my temper," he said. "I shouldn't have done it but I did. In fairness, Dylan is a young jockey and he didn't have too much experience around Ascot. He didn't help my chances but it wasn't his fault.

"When you're upset and someone shoves a microphone in your face straight after a race, things might come out in a way they shouldn't. I was surprised by the headlines it caused and I did ring Dylan and Joseph O'Brien to apologise."

Dettori was on the other hand of a rebuke at Ascot, with John Gosden expressing disappointment at his display on Queen Elizabeth II Stakes second Palace Pier.

"On a big day like that emotions run high," added Dettori. "John was probably right. I probably didn't ride the best race on Palace Pier. I possibly did make a mistake. I should have kicked earlier. I was trying to do the right thing but I obviously did the wrong thing. It's too late now. What is done is done. Crying about it won't change the result."
