Hot favourite Logician given green light for St Leger

Great Voltigeur winner Logician will line up for the William Hill St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday week, the final Classic of the season in Britain.

Connections had been considering a couple of alternative options for the unbeaten son of Frankel ever since his emphatic defeat of Constantinople at York last month, but have settled on a trip to Doncaster where he will race beyond 1m4f for the first time.

The John Gosden-trained grey looked none the worse for his York exertions when breezing a mile on the Al Bahathri Polytrack on Wednesday morning under Robert Havlin.

A 5-4 St Leger favourite with the sponsors, Logician will bid to give Gosden a fifth win in the 1m6½f Group 1 following Shantou (1996), Lucarno (2007), Arctic Cosmos (2010) and Masked Marvel (2011).

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, said: "There were a couple of things to think about after York which is why we didn't commit to the St Leger straight away, not least how the horse came out of York.

"Logician seems in good shape and the Leger looks the right race for him. He shapes as if he'll stay the trip so we're hopeful. He worked nicely this morning and it's all systems go for Doncaster."

Abdullah has only won the St Leger once, with Toulon in 1991, but has had some hard-luck stories in the past, notably Sea Moon who had no luck in running when third in 2011.
