Cartmel's jumps meeting on Friday has been cancelled because of heavy rain overnight.

The Cumbrian track had been due to host eight races from 1.15, but clerk of the course Anthea Leigh was left with no choice but to call off the fixture.

However, she does not anticipate any problems for racing at the course on Sunday.

"We've had 17mm of rain overnight, 10mm of it since 4.45am and it's still raining," Leigh said.

"Most of the track is fine, but, with it coming down so heavily, we are getting areas of water pooling, especially on the crossings.

"We're getting run-off water because it's been a very dry June - apart from 3mm this is the first rain we've had this month.

"The forecast is set to keep raining until 2pm, with this front pivoting over us, rather than moving away, so sadly we've had to abandon today."

Cartmel's seven-race card on Sunday starts at 1.40 and Leigh added: "The forecast is for the rain to clear this afternoon and then be dry with sunny intervals - 21C - for Saturday and Sunday. Knowing the track, I don't anticipate any problems for Sunday, but we've had to call off today."

Flat racing on Friday does take place at Yarmouth, Doncaster, the Curragh, Newmarket, Newcastle and Chester.
