'He makes vast appeal at 10-1' - why this horse can win at Royal Ascot 2022

With Royal Ascot looming, we asked Racing Post tipsters and editorial staff for their best bets of the week. Here is what they had to offer . . .

Fresh

Current odds: 8-1

Wokingham Stakes (Saturday, June 18)

By Richard Birch

Fresh boasts course form figures of 21234 at Ascot, and always runs a big race when sent to the Berkshire venue. Those figures look even better when taking into account four of those five performances were in fields of 27, 16, 21 and 18 runners respectively.

He finished a neck second to Rohaan in the Wokingham 12 months ago, outpointed close home by a smart sprinter whose next five starts were all in Group 1 company.

Fresh will have been trained to peak at Royal Ascot by James Fanshawe, and looks well worth a bet.

Auguste Rodin

Current odds: 5-1

Chesham Stakes (Saturday, June 18)

By Scott Burton

Rhododendron's racing career featured Group 1 success in each of her three seasons on track and her son by Deep Impact, Auguste Rodin, looks to have inherited plenty of the family talent on what is admittedly the limited evidence of his sole start at the Curragh.

On that occasion he was forced to spot Crypto Force too much of a start having found his route blocked on two separate occasions but he still created an excellent impression in the circumstances.

He is likely to have to overcome stablemate Alfred Munnings in the Chesham but that colt already has an entry back at six furlongs in the Railway Stakes on Irish Derby day and the seventh furlong here is almost guaranteed to be Auguste Rodin's best.

My Prospero

Current odds: 4-1

St James's Palace Stakes (Tuesday, June 14)

By Graeme Rodway

Contrary to what many people think, I'm fairly certain this year's 2,000 Guineas was a weak renewal. Newmarket runner-up Native Trail didn't frank the form when making hard work of beating the 102-rated New Energy in the Irish 2,000 at the Curragh and his stablemate Coroebus shouldn't be anywhere near as short as he currently is for this race.

Take him on with My Prospero, who hammered the smart 113-rated Reach For The Moon when landing the Heron Stakes at Sandown last month on just his third career start and looks open to plenty of further improvement.

William Haggas is the best trainer in Britain right now and he will have My Prospero primed for this first Group 1.

King's Lynn

Current odds: 14-1

King's Stand Stakes (Tuesday, June 14)

By Matt Rennie

I'm more than happy to take on the International raiders given Golden Pal has yet to produce his best form in Britain and the long journey Nature Strip has undertaken, and things could finally fall in King's Lynn's favour this year.

On both outings at the royal meeting last year he was denied a clear run at crucial stages – he did well to be beaten three-and-a-quarter-lengths in this race while I'm confident he would have won the Wokingham with a trouble-free passage.

His sire, Cable Bay, improved with age and King's Lynn showed great progress when winning the Temple Stakes last month, so expect another bold showing from the Queen's runner.

Cadillac

Current odds: 8-1

Wolferton Stakes (Tuesday, June 14)

By Robbie Wilders

The Wolferton Stakes is ripe for a bet. Addeybb is 6lb clear on official figures and the rightful favourite, but is eight now, past his best and won't get the soft ground he relishes. I wouldn't be shocked if he didn't show up. Next in the betting is Mohaafeth, who is lining up at York on Friday and surely won't run either.

Cadillac makes vastly more appeal at a standout 10-1. This has been the long-term target for the Jessica Harrington-trained four-year-old and he turned in a career best last time at Leopardstown (useful RPR of 116) with the first-time blinkers working a treat. He appears to be coming to the boil at the right time and will get his optimum conditions.

Minzaal

Current odds: 14-1

Platinum Jubilee Stakes (Saturday, June 18)

By David Jennings

There is no way Minzaal should still be double figures for the Platinum Jubilee. His reappearance at York was far more encouraging than the bare form suggests and I'm convinced we have yet to see the best of the 2020 Gimcrack winner.

He was left to race on his own when Dragon Symbol dropped away so quickly at York and you must remember Highfield Princess was race fit and having her fifth start of the year. Minzaal pulled six lengths clear on the nearside and Jim Crowley didn't knock him about once he realised he wasn't going to beat the winner.

Expect that outing to have blown away the cobwebs and he ought to be cherry ripe for the Platinum Jubilee at a track he has run so well at in the past. Owen Burrows has made no secret of the fact that the Platinum Jubilee and the July Cup are his two main aims this season and York was simply a stepping stone for them.

He is just the type of laid-back sprinter I want for a big occasion at Royal Ascot and he will have no problem coping with the crowd and the noise. I think he's a Group 1 winner waiting to happen.

Existent

Current odds: 50-1

King's Stand Stakes (Tuesday, June 14)

By Maddy Playle

There is boatloads of early pace in this year's King's Stand as Golden Pal, Nature Strip, Winter Power, Equilateral and Ponntos all like to blaze a trail, so, as a few commentators have already noted, it could set up for a closer.

However, they all seem to be neglecting Existent, who put in a monstrous effort to be second off a similar set up in the Palace House. He had Twilight Calls, Arecibo, Tis Marvellous and Monndamej behind him then yet he is bigger than all of those now.

The Temple Stakes wasn't run to suit but he still ran well enough there and this much more testing five furlongs should be ideal, so the 50-1 on offer looks good value.

Arcadian Sunrise

Current odds: 9-1

Ascot Stakes (Tuesday, June 14)

By Brian Dowling

The best word to describe Arcadian Sunrise is consistent. The John Queally-trained gelding always runs his race, and he looks set for a big outing on the opening day's longest race.

The son of Arcadio is 7-17 so far in his career in all codes, with his most notable success coming in the Sky Bet Handicap at York last August when comfortably accounting for a good field.

He's only had the two outings since, and while he has won on soft before, he detested the bottomless ground at Naas on his final appearance last season, and all his best form has come on better ground.

He ran a cracker in the Chester Cup on reappearance, hitting the line well suggesting the 2m4f trip he will tackle for the first time in this division should be no issue. That run should leave him spot on, for this assignment and under promising claimer Harry Davies, he will surely run his race like he so often does.

Bopedro

Current odds: 25-1

Royal Hunt Cup (Wednesday, June 15)

By Owen Goulding

The Royal Hunt Cup is certain to be run at a frantic gallop and with that in mind, the Jessica Harrington-trained Bopedro sticks out like a sore thumb.

He came from off the pace to run away with last year’s Irish Cambridgeshire and posted an even better RPR when an unlucky third at Leopardstown on his next start, where he was caught wide before doing comfortably best of those held up.

Two runs this season have been fairly disappointing, but he is back on his Leopardstown mark and you can guarantee this race will be run to suit. He has already proven he can be competitive off this mark and I'm mystified at a price of 25-1, especially with the likely each-way terms on offer.
