Very Patient
Fourth, Catterick, Tuesday

In a race packed with a more obvious eyecatcher – the run of third-placed El Jefe was the subject of a stewards' inquiry – this was a performance more likely to sneak under the radar.

Very Patient also caught the eye in behind on his fourth run over hurdles, keeping on to finish a 27-length fourth without being given a hugely hard time of it from the second-last.

Balko Saint
Winner, Wincanton, Wednesday

Third in a Grade 2 behind Duffle Coat in November, a race that has worked out well, Balko Saint impressed against older rivals here.

The juvenile, trained by Jane Williams, was second best in the market behind the Gary Moore-trained Robin's Dream but pulled clear with that useful rival and scored by a neck with a yawning 21-length gap back to the rest.

Speight'spercomete
Second, Meydan, Saturday

Speight'spercomete has now finished runner-up on his last two starts and has been a shade unlucky, being caught wide on both occasions.

Slowly away this time, he ended up covering 13 metres more than the winner, Panadol, yet was beaten just three-quarters of a length at the line.

Doug Watson's three-year-old will likely come up against Panadol again in the UAE Derby at the end of the month, but this horse is improving and, with a kinder run round, he would have a good chance of reversing form. [Ron Wood]

Roman Rosso
Third, Meydan, Saturday

Having shaped encouragingly on his reappearance, Roman Rosso missed his next intended start having reportedly suffered a quarter crack, so there's a chance this run was just needed.

If that is the case, it was a hugely promising one. Travelling strongly for most of the way, he was three wide on the first turn while up with the speed, and two-wide on the turn in, and he just got tired in the closing stages.

Satish Seemar's former South American Group 1 winner could go well at a price in what looks an open Dubai World Cup. Paddy Power and Betfair both go 33-1. [Ron Wood]
