'He can win another decent pot' - our experts with seven Goodwood eyecatchers

Majestic Dawn
Fifth, Unibet "You're On" Chesterfield Cup Handicap, Tuesday

Majestic Dawn ran at Goodwood from an 11lb higher mark than for his 40-1 surprise win in last year’s Cambridgeshire, but that might not be insurmountable given how he shaped in the 1m2f handicap which opened the meeting.

He finished fifth behind Migration but I imagine connections would love a go at the race again, as the five-year-old, who has typically gone from the front on recent starts, was slowly away.

Paul Hanagan may have used up more energy than ideal to get a prominent position just behind the leaders, then he had to wait until inside the final furlong before getting a clear run, by which point the eventual winner was in full flight down the outside.

Still lightly raced for his age, Majestic Dawn’s effort was 1lb below his best in the Cambridgeshire on Racing Post Ratings and there’s every chance he can win another decent pot, perhaps even at Listed level if well placed.

Hodler
Third, British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes, Tuesday

Hodler's effort in the 6f maiden can be definitely upgraded, as he pulled very hard through the early stages, yet still managed to finish strongly.

Jockey Pat Cosgrave managed to get the juvenile to settle, but as a consequence they fell back to the rear and did not enjoy the clearest of passages.

Bred to handle further, Hodler has more to offer, especially when tackling 7f and beyond.

Willoughby Bay
Fourth, British Stallion Studs Alice Keppel EBF Fillies' Conditions Stakes, Wednesday

Not a week to write home about for Charlie Hills, whose runners, including Battaash did not seem comfortable in the tacky, drying conditions.

"Most of ours want it rattling quick," his assistant Jamie Insole told me on Friday afternoon, so perhaps the effort of Willoughby Bay on her debut in Wednesday's conditions stakes can be upgraded.

Slow from the stalls, she was urged along early by Kieran Shoemark, but made some headway to finish fourth, five and a half lengths behind the experienced Illustrating, a highly regarded Karl Burke filly who could win a Group race next time.

Ninth, World Pool Handicap, Wednesday

Dutch Decoy had run perfectly well on his first start since the beginning of March when fourth at Lingfield a week earlier and he again caught the eye in the 7f handicap on Wednesday.

On the heels of the leaders along the inside two furlongs out, he looked as if he could play a part in the finish, only for the gaps to close repeatedly on him as a wave of challengers swept down the outside.

To his credit, having lost his position, he soon rallied and was running on again at the finish, suggesting he could be competitive off his current handicap mark granted more luck in running.

Sixth, Unibet Golden Mile Handicap, Friday

Orbaan rattled home for sixth in the Golden Mile and might have finished far closer to the leaders with fewer traffic problems.

The six-year-old, who was sent off at 66-1 for David O'Meara, made eyecatching headway inside the final furlong and will be a great deal shorter if he lines up in the Clipper Logistics Handicap.

He finished seventh at York last year and beat some good horses, including Qaysar, winner of the Listed Spring Trophy last May.

Perfect Power
Fifth, Richmond Stakes, Thursday

Royal Ascot winner Perfect Power broke slightly slowly and found trouble as he made inroads on an already quickening pace in Thursday's Richmond Stakes. He also raced towards the unfavoured centre of the track.

The Norfolk hero finished on the bridle in fifth, so can be forgiven this run, and the Gimcrack looks a reasonable target.

Trainer Richard Fahey holds Perfect Power in the highest regard, so expect him to be winning another big prize before the season is out.

Boundless Power
12th, Unibet Stewards' Sprint Handicap, Saturday

Hard-luck stories are a certainty in big-field sprint handicaps and this progressive four-year-old had nowhere to go at crucial stages of the Stewards' Cup consolation race.

His chance had gone after twice being denied a run between the two-furlong and one-furlong marker. It was a similar tale when a keeping-on fifth at Ascot the time before.

He is on a workable mark and Mick Appleby can win a nice prize with his sprinter.
