Galway going eases to good to yielding after 5mm of rain overnight
The going for day one of the Galway festival has eased to good to yielding (from good) following 5mm of rain overnight.
The week-long meeting begins on Monday with a seven-race Flat card. The going remains good on the jumps course, with selective watering taking place on the chase course.
There is 3mm of rain forecast on Monday and 4-5mm expected on Wednesday when the highlight is the Tote Galway Plate.
Galway racecourse manager Michael Moloney said: "The forecast is hard to predict, but we are expecting rain over the next few days. Because we have put on so much water, it probably won't take much to slow it down, so it's a bit of a balancing act but the team are doing a good job."
Galway is limited to just 1,000 paying customers for each of the seven days. Those tickets were largely distributed to members, while some who bought tickets many months in advance via the website were also given priority in the allocation.
Moloney said: "We have 1,200 members here. Each member was limited to four tickets. Some people bought tickets at Christmas and they were honoured. There wasn't much left over after that, unfortunately."
