A Chester double on Friday could not have come at a better time or place for apprentice Jane Elliott two months into a new job.

Elliott sits atop the apprentice table for the championship season that started a week ago with three winners, getting her new boss Tom Dascombe on the Chester scoreboard with success on Sha La La La Lee and She Can Boogie in front of the ITV and Sky Sports cameras.

The 3lb claimer, just turned 24, hopes her fast start to life in the north will bring more recognition.

"I haven't set myself goals after the move," said Elliott. "I just want to improve and ride well, but with 72 winners now it is a big season for me. Hopefully, if I ride my claim out, I can put my name on the map.

"I rode the apprentice race winner for Mark Johnston at the meeting last year, but didn't have much experience of the track."

Elliott's recent success has come at a cost having picked up a total of nine days in suspensions for two cases of careless riding, the biggest one for six days for causing interference when crossing over from the start on She Can Boogie in the 5f conditions race.

However, in terms of form she is flying having ridden five winners in the last two weeks, four of which were for Dascombe, and is ready to travel far and wide for success from her new base at Manor House Stables in Cheshire.

"After three years in Newmarket, I have moved to Cheshire and live around the corner from the yard, and I will be clocking up the miles to ride winners," she said.

Having ridden 23 winners in 2018 after 33 the previous year, Elliott started with Ralph Beckett before moving to Mick Appleby and then to Newmarket with George Margarson.

She added: "I have ridden most of my winners for George, who got me going in Newmarket. But he told me if I wanted to progress I needed to go to a bigger yard as he didn't have many in training.

"I called Tom [Dascombe] because he has plenty of horses and has been loyal to his jockeys, and I have been there two months."
