Elarqam supplemented for Saturday's Irish Champion Stakes

Elarqam, who produced a career-best performance when third in the Juddmonte International Stakes at York last month, has been supplemented for Saturday's Group 1 Qipco Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

The Mark Johnston-trained colt ran a blinder on the Knavesmire to finish third to Japan and Crystal Ocean, and connections have decided to pay the €75,000 supplementary fee to take his place in Ireland. He is one of 11 contenders for the Irish Champion Stakes following the confirmation stage.

Reflecting on Elarqam's York effort, Charlie Johnston, assistant to his father, said: "It was one of those slightly bizarre situations at York. In the morning, if you'd have offered us third place in the International we'd have bitten your hand off.

"Yet the way he finished his race left us slightly frustrated as he was short of room at a time when things really mattered. He'd certainly have finished half a length closer with a clear run.

"He certainly proved he's up to Group 1 level and the Irish Champion Stakes is the obvious next step."

Elarqam, a son of Frankel out of Attraction, had previously won the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes by three and a quarter lengths from Addeybb.

Irish Champion Stakes betting (best prices): Magical 7-4, Headman 7-2, Elarqam 9-2, Madhmoon 7-1, Deirdre 12-1, Magna Grecia 14-1, Anthony Van Dyck 14-1, Magic Wand 25-1, Pink Dogwood 25-1, Verbal Dexterity 66-1
