Declan Lavery, the amateur banned for ten days by stewards for his ride on Jerrysback at last week’s Cheltenham Festival, will have his appeal against the suspension heard at the BHA on Thursday.

Lavery was suspended after he was deemed to have continued to ride “when it appeared to be contrary to the horse’s welfare” when guiding Jerrysback to a distant third in the National Hunt Chase, a race in which two other riders were suspended for the same breach of the rules.

The rider on Sunday called the ban “pretty silly” and has been backed in his appeal by Jerrysback's owner JP McManus, his trainer Philip Hobbs and Sir Anthony McCoy.

The future of the National Hunt Chase, which has been under the microscope after the bans and the death of Ballyward, will be covered in the coming weeks by the BHA, as will any other issues relating to this year’s Cheltenham Festival.
