Cue Card: Tania Still's portrait set to be sold at Cheltenham on Friday

A one-off portrait of Cue Card by renowned equestrian artist Tania Still will go up for sale as part of the Countryside Alliance’s Countryside Day auction after racing at Cheltenham on Friday.

The painting, which has been created in oil on linen, depicts the prolific chaser whose many victories included the King George VI Chase at Kempton, 2013 Ryanair Chase and a hat-trick of wins in the Betfair Chase at Haydock.

The portrait is one of 12 exclusive lots that will be presented for live auction during the Countryside Alliance’s members’ lunch at Cheltenham.

Racing Welfare’s head of fundraising Mark Loades said: “We're very honoured to be the charity set to benefit alongside the Countryside Alliance from funds raised by Countryside Day at Cheltenham.

"We would like to express special thanks to Tania Still for donating her beautiful depiction of the hugely popular Cue Card for auction, and to all of those who have so generously donated lots this year."

Still said: "I am very happy and excited to be supporting RacingWelfare again and I really hope that the painting will raise lots of money for both charities when it goes up for sale at auction next week.

"Meeting Cue Card was a real treat and I would like say thank you to Colin Tizzard and Jean Bishop for their support with the project from start to finish."

Death of Paul Elliott

Paul Elliott, former jockey and long-time BHA employee, lost his year-long fight against illness on Friday. He was 72.

A successful apprentice for Ron Smyth at Epsom - he won a few dozen races as a claimer - he went on to ride numerous winners over jumps for Bob Turnell.

His best mount was Ron Smyth's hurdler Nikko, on whom he won on the same card as Arkle's 1965 King George win at Kempton. His first winner had been Ron on the Flat at Lingfield in August that year.

When his race-riding career finished he became part of the then BHB's dope testing team on southern tracks.

He combined that with riding out for Richard Hannon, helping out in the office, and driving Richard snr to the races.

The former champion trainer said: "Paul has been part of the furniture here for a long time. We will miss him a lot."

Elliott is survived by wife Carol - also a long-time member of the Hannon team - daughters Amanda and Karen, and five grandchildren.
