Charlie Bennett is hoping the exposure gained by landing a big prize at Newbury on Saturday will help his transition from apprentice to fully fledged jockey.

Bennett rode his first winner without a claim at Wolverhampton this month and picked the ideal moment to land a second when steering the Hughie Morrison-trained Buzz to a nose victory in the £75,000 Dubai Duty Free Handicap.

"The win has come at a good time and it was the first race shown on ITV Racing, so hopefully a few people might have seen it," said Bennett, who has served his entire apprenticeship with Morrison over the last five years.

"It was very good of the boss to give me the chance to ride a nice horse in a big Saturday race and hopefully I can keep the ball rolling."

The 23-year-old, who hails from Essex and has Guy Jewell as his agent, came in for the ride on Buzz with Liam Keniry on duty at Chelmsford.

With other valuable targets in the pipeline for the progressive four-year-old, Bennett is understandably keen to maintain the partnership.

"Buzz is an exciting horse who is three from five this season," he said. "His options include the November Handicap [at Doncaster] and Middle Distance Final at Kempton, where he's three from three. I got to fill the gap at Newbury and I'd love to ride him again."

Bennett, whose other big-race highlight came on Dutch Law in an £80,000 handicap at Ascot in September 2016, has ridden 22 winners this year, having finished 2017 with a career-best 39.
