Bolshoi Ballet all the rage for Derby glory following Derrinstown demolition

The 2021 Flat season is well under way and it's full steam ahead to the first of the Irish Classics this month – the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas and Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas – and next month's Epsom Classics, the Cazoo Derby and Cazoo Oaks.

Market movers come thick and fast as the key Classic trials are run in Britain and Ireland, but big-race contenders can come from anywhere and it's easy to miss a potential dark horse. Classic Clues, our new series running every morning, has you covered.

Here's a recap of Sunday's action and how it's impacted the Classic betting, while we mark your card with key names to note today.

Racing round-up: Bolshoi Ballet dances to Derby favouritism

Bolshoi Ballet became the clear favourite for the Cazoo Derby after a dominant victory in his trial at Leopardstown on Sunday.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained runner showed a powerful turn of foot when landing the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes, and he impressed the bookmakers, who initially cut him to 2-1 (from 5-1) to take Classic glory next month. However, that price would shorten again and the Derby favourite is no bigger than 7-4 after his impressive weekend win.

O'Brien also took the 1,000 Guineas last Sunday with Mother Earth, and his hand in the Irish version looks even stronger after Joan Of Arc bounced back to winning ways.

She made every yard in the Irish 1,000 Guineas Trial and looks an obvious contender for the main race. Interestingly, her full sister Marvellous won the Curragh Classic in 2014.

What they said

Aidan O'Brien, trainer of Bolshoi Ballet
He's coming on lovely and we're very happy with him. He's uncomplicated – he relaxes and he quickens. He was pencilled in for the two runs – the Ballysax and the Derrinstown – and then on to the Derby. We've always loved him and thought a lot of him.

All eyes on York declarations

It would be a major surprise if a Classic winner is to come from Monday's cards so it may be worth paying attention to seeing which top prospects will appear at York's Dante festival when the opening day's declarations are revealed today.

Racing at York commences on Wednesday with a quality field looking set to head to the Knavesmire for the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes, a key trial for the Oaks. Exciting fillies Teona and Noon Star are the ones who particularly capture the eye.

There could be Royal Ascot clues to emerge from today's action with some decent milers involved in the Listed Racing Welfare Royal Windsor Stakes (6.30) this evening.
