A documentary on the Irish Derby will be shown for the first time on TG4 at 9.30pm on Wednesday evening. The programme will also be available worldwide on www.tg4.ie.

The Irish Derby - Níos Mó Ná Rása (More Than a Race) charts the rise of the Irish Derby from its humble beginnings in 1866 to now being recognised as one of the world's most famous races.

With unique access to the Curragh racecourse, training yards, stud farms and rare archive footage, the fascinating one-hour documentary merges its colourful and inspirational past with its exciting future, through the new multi-million euro redevelopment.

Aidan and Joseph O'Brien, Dermot Weld, Jim Bolger, John Gosden, John Oxx and Sir Michael Stoute are all featured in the documentary, while there are also interviews with Frankie Dettori, Lester Piggott, Michael Kinane and Pat Smullen.

Mumford scoops top prize at national championships

Mumford became the youngest ever horse to be crowned Goffs UK Supreme Champion at the RoR Goffs UK National Championships this week, an event at which former greats Cue Card and Coneygree strutted their stuff.

Ridden by Collette McGoldrick to victory, the gelded Mumford retired from the track last July after running eight times over four years and is now plying his trade in the showing world.

An emotional McGoldrick, who produces show ponies with partner Edward Young, said: “He had a few months off after finishing his racing career and then we started working with him over the winter.

"He just did everything we asked of him and more. He's a special horse. I'm just very proud of him.”

Neither Cue Card nor Coneygree made it to the the final of the RoR Open In-Hand Championship class but took part in the Always A Star Parade at the Saturday evening Gala Performance.

Other notable names competing at the four-day show included former Royal Ascot winner Namibian, Sovereign Debt and Annacotty, who all made it through to the finals of their respective classes.
