When Johnny B Goode crossed the finishing line first at Chelmsford on Thursday night the celebrations could hardly have been more poignant.

Owner John Goode had lost his battle against cancer that very morning, and family and friends had travelled to the course hoping his namesake might be able to produce a fitting tribute.

Sent off at 8-1 in a 7f handicap, Johnny B Goode, running in the colours of Goode’s wife, Chandra, stormed to the front under Silvestre de Sousa and held off the late challenge of favourite Brick Lane to win by a neck.
