Jason Watson the latest to benefit from Andrew Balding's finishing school

Jason Watson was one of the stars of the Flat turf season in 2018, beginning the year as a 7lb claimer and ending it with more than 100 winners and as the newly appointed first jockey to Roger Charlton.

The path to success Watson has taken is a well-trodden one, as he is the latest graduate of Andrew Balding's Kingsclere finishing school. Balding has overseen the development of several leading Flat riders, including Oisin Murphy, William Buick and David Probert.

Speaking on Tuesday, Balding paid tribute to Watson's achievements and reflected on the skills he has displayed to earn his opportunities.

"He's done fabulously well and he's a very mature, professional person to deal with," the trainer said. "He's made an excellent decision as he's gone to a very good yard and I very much hope we'll still be able to use him when he's available."

As well as the maturity and professionalism that belie the fact Watson is only 18, Balding also hailed the jockey's talent in the saddle.

"That sort of combination tends to fast-track these young riders," Balding added. "He's ridden well all year, but he didn't ride like a 7lb claimer.

"He's very reliable, horses run for him and he's got everything going for him."
