'It's not fair on the horses' - PJA lobbying to reverse backhand-only whip rule

The Professional Jockeys Association (PJA) is calling on the BHA to reverse plans to restrict use of the whip in British racing to the backhand position only following uproar from riders in a meeting last week.

PJA jumps president David Bass has been at the centre of talks with his weighing room colleagues on rules which are set to be implemented over jumps on February 6 and on the Flat the following month.

The association is said to have advised the sport's governing body that restricting the whip's use to the backhand position only is a major concern to riders, and Bass is "hopeful" the whip's use in the forehand will be permitted when an update from the BHA is released shortly.
