'It made all the work and dedication feel worth it'
Stuart Thom, winner of the 2016 Stud Staff Award, reflects on his success and the challenges of the job
What makes for good stable staff?
A passion for horses and the industry is essential because of the long hours and low wages. They have to be dedicated, prepared to work hard and reliable. It's also important to have a desire to expand your knowledge as there is so much to learn within the industry. An understanding that you will never stop learning with horses and a good sense of humour will keep you going.
How important are these awards?
They're very positive for the industry as they recognise the incredible work and dedication each person puts into their various roles. The awards also acknowledge that it is not just the individual but the whole team. Every successful stud and stable is built around a strong team.
