World's best Arrogate to retire after defence of Breeders' Cup Classic crown

Arrogate, the world's best horse and the thoroughbred who has won more prize-money than any other, will be retired to stud after running in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar on November 4, connections have confirmed.

Trained by Bob Baffert for Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte operation, Arrogate announced himself with a stunning victory in last year's Travers Stakes before claiming the scalp of the popular California Chrome in the 2016 Classic at Santa Anita.

He then won the $12 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in January and helped take his earnings to £13,524,981 when a thrilling winner of Meydan's $10m Dubai World Cup in March.

A son of Unbridled's Song, Arrogate has been beaten on his two subsequent starts in the States, but is a general 3-1 second-favourite with British bookmakers to retain his Classic crown and pleased when exercising on Tuesday, after which Juddmonte's Garrett O'Rourke said: "Arrogate is training forwardly towards his next start in the Classic, as witnessed by his bullet workout today."

Californian-based Baffert, a Hall of Fame inductee who handled 2015 Triple Crown hero American Pharoah, added of the brilliant four-year-old: "That's the greatest horse I've ever seen run."

No stud fee has been announced.
