Wootton puts down Classic marker for Godolphin
Prix Isonomy (Listed) 2yo | 1m | Turf
Wootton looks a good piece of business for Godolphin after catapulting himself into the picture for next season’s Classics with a dominant display in the Listed Prix Isonomy on Thursday.
The son of Almanzor’s sire Wootton Basset went into a fair few notebooks after winning by six lengths here on debut in August, after which he was sold by his owner/breeders, Haras de Quietville.
The colt put five lengths on the Ed Dunlop-trained Alternative Fact after showing a fine turn of foot on ground described as very soft.
Trainer Alex Pantall has enjoyed plenty of success over the years with Sheikh Mohammed and Godolphin, including a 2007 win in the Prix de Diane with West Wind.
Asked if he felt any pressure before Wootton’s reappearance, Pantall said: “Yes indeed because the horse hadn’t run for two months and you always ask yourself if they have done enough work. He is still a little immature and will make mental and physical progress this winter hopefully. But his mind was excellent today and he has had a valuable lesson.”
“I was a little worried after his first run that he had done it slightly on nervous energy but he was very calm today and that will be a big help to him in the future. It’s been a long time since I have had a colt for the owners and it is a great pleasure,” he added.
Betway quoted Wootton at 28-1 for the 2,000 Guineas though discussions will be ongoing within the Godolphin camp as to his future programme
Prix des Reservoirs-Etalon Kendargent (Group 3) 2yo fillies | 1m | Turf
With You put herself firmly in the picture for middle-distance honours next year after dominating proceedings from start to finish under a no-nonsense ride from Aurelien Lemaitre at Deauville on Wednesday.
A sister to the brilliant We Are, With You also carries the colours of owner/breeder George Strawbridge and is guided by the Prix de l'Opera heroine's trainer Freddy Head.
The filly dictated a sensible pace but had plenty of reserves when Lemaitre set her about her business with two furlongs to run.
"She is beautiful to look at, is very well-bred and is a really pleasing filly," said Head. "She has plenty going for her: she has a great action, she gallops strongly and, when she accelerates, she's gone."
With You did not escape the attention of many observers when making a winning debut, scoring by six lengths at Saint-Cloud on heavy ground.
Head said: "I am very happy with her and I think she will certainly stay further than 1,600 metres [a mile] next year. It certainly wasn't forbidden to make it as she has a such a good stride on her and there was no point it turning into a sprint."
