Veterans of the frozen lake: Berrahri and John Best back for more in St Moritz
The snow and ice may be affecting British racing but trainer John Best is delighted with the wintry conditions where he is this weekend.
The Kent trainer is in Switzerland, preparing for the start of the St Moritz 'white turf' season with old ally Berrahri, who runs at the opening meeting on the frozen lake on Sunday.
Even predicted heavy snowfall before Sunday is good news for Best, who said: "Hopefully that will work in our favour as it should make the going a bit slower than it is at the moment and Berrahri wants a bit further than Sunday's distance."
The eight-year-old has made this trip for the last four years, with form figures of 21214533212. Last year he ran three weekends running, winning once and finishing second twice, including in the feature Grosser Preis von St Moritz.
Berrahri is reunited with top local rider Raphael Lingg, who won on him two years ago.
Best, who has also travelled the Paul Webber-trained New Agenda with Berrahri to St Moritz, said: "The both run on Sunday, having run against each other at Kempton last time.
"It's a tough race as also in there is last year's Grosser Preis winner Nimrod, who beat Berrahri twice last year.
"The plan is to run Berrahri on the three weekends and he looked good in his prep race at Kempton, showing all his battling qualities, but unfortunately there is a big turnaround in the weights with Paul's New Agenda, who had his first look at the track this morning."
Berrahri finished third in that Kempton race on January 18, beating New Agenda by two and a half lengths, but while he was receiving 5lb from the Webber runner there he has to give him four kilos (9lb) on Sunday because of his prize-money levels at St Moritz.
Kieran O'Neill is also in action at St Moritz on Sunday with two rides, including on last year's big-race winner Nimrod.
