A racecourse like no other will host a first exhibition raceday on March 23 with members of the public invited to Conghua racecourse in mainland China.

Conghua, situated in Guangzhou in the Guangdong province, is the first premier racecourse and thoroughbred training centre in the area and will house more than 660 racehorses at its full capacity.

Five exhibition races will take place on the day and will be run under the governance of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, with the participation of Hong Kong-based horses, trainers and jockeys.

There will be no betting, which is against the law in mainland China, on offer for the races and no live broadcasts, with each race televised with a 15-minute delay in Hong Kong and an hour delay in the mainland.

Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, chief executive officer of HKJC, said: “Conghua is the first racecourse and training centre for thoroughbreds in mainland China which meets the highest international standards.

“To support Conghua’s vision to become a national and international tourist destination with its natural beauty and hot springs, we will hold exhibition racing to showcase the sport of horse racing with the beauty and speed of thoroughbred horses as well as our world-class jockeys in action.”
