Hayley Turner wagged the Silver Saddle tail at the Shergar Cup in notching just three points for a fifth-placed finish – her best of the day from five rides – but she has an immediate chance to put that behind her at Deauville on Sunday.

Turner gets a first taste of what she can look forward to when riding in France regularly this winter, exercising her right to draw the 2kg (4.4lb) claim available to female riders in the country in a handicap on the Prix Jacques le Marois undercard.

Turner partners Wyck Hall for trainer Stephane Wattel in the 6½f Prix du Champ Durand, a 14-runner handicap in which she is taking on reigning French champion jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot, as well as Olivier Peslier, Christophe Soumillon and Mickael Barzalona.

The 34-year-old, who has three top-level wins to her name and was the first female to ride 100 winners in a calendar year in Britain, lost her right to claim as an apprentice in 2005 and 'retired' in 2015.

However, she has rediscovered her competitive spirit and hopes the French claim – the main driver of her new adventure – will work to her advantage.

She said: "I'm looking forward to riding with the claim at Deauville, and five rides at the Shergar Cup have got me nicely warmed up. I ride Wyck Hall, who won at Maisons-Laffitte last time, and my 2kg claim offsets nearly all of the 2.5kg penalty he picked up."

Turner, who was making her 11th appearance at the Shergar Cup and combined her five fruitless rides with occasional appearances with her colleagues on ITV, added: "It's been a brilliant day. Although I didn't come closer than fifth I don't think I did anything massively wrong. I just had no joy."
