Tom Marquand set for quick return after Randwick fall
Jockey Tom Marquand escaped unharmed from a fall at Randwick on Saturday, but will have to pass a concussion test before being able to resume riding next weekend.
The former champion apprentice, 21, was taken to hospital with possible head and shoulder injuries after his mount Ronstar clipped heels and fell fatally in a 7f contest.
Marquand had earlier secured a Group 3 double on the card aboard Away Game and Prague, either of which he could potentially ride in the A$3.5 million (£1.77m) Golden Slipper on March 21.
Writing on Twitter, Marquand said: “Huge thank you for all the messages about riding a Group 3 double at Randwick for [Ciaron Maher & David Eustace] aboard Away Game and Prague.
“Also [for] all the well wishes after my fall. Pleased to report all scans and checks clear, so hopefully good to go in no time!”
Gary Portelli, who trained Ronstar, said the four-year-old would be “sorely missed”. Writing on Twitter, Portelli said: “RIP Ronstar. Swayback Jack as he was affectionately known in our stable, gave us and his owners so much enjoyment. An absolute gentleman of a horse and he will be sorely missed.”
