Terebellum out to extend strong recent British record in fillies' feature
3.25 Deauville
Shadwell Prix de la Nonette | G2 | 1m2f | 3yo f | Sky
British trainers have won the prestigious fillies' feature in two of the past four years and are double-handed this time around with the contrasting pair Terebellum and Divine Image.
John Gosden is chasing a third win in the contest with the Listed placed Terebellum, who bids to emulate Charity Belle (2009) and Jazzi Top (2015).
The daughter of Sea The Stars was unraced as a juvenile but looked worth the wait when landing her maiden on her belated introduction over 1m2f at Goodwood in May.
Made even-money favourite to back that up in the Abingdon Stakes at Newbury in June, Terebellum looked uneasy on the soft ground and could only muster third behind Antonia De Vega.
Rested for this after the Newbury performance, the three-year-old has worked nicely on Newmarket's Al Bahathri all-weather gallop of late.
Gosden, who is enjoying a golden summer with his fillies most recently when Fanny Logan won a Listed contest at Salisbury on Wednesday, said: "Obviously we hope Terebellum runs a nice race and she didn't like the very heavy ground at Newbury last time. Hopefully it's not that soft over there and hopefully she can get a piece of it."
Charlie Appleby, who won this two years ago with the subsequent Group 1 winner Sobetsu, fields Divine Image who makes her first European start of 2019 and a first ever outing on turf.
The daughter of Scat Daddy was last seen when coming home 13th in the Group 2 UAE Derby over an extended nine furlongs at Meydan on Dubai World Cup Night in March.
She had previously recorded two impressive wins on dirt at Meydan, taking the Group 3 UAE Oaks over an extended nine furlongs in February and the Listed Al Bastakiya over the same distance the following month.
William Buick takes the ride on Divine Image, who scored on her debut at Chelmsford last December.
Charlie Appleby said: “Divine Image’s preparation has gone well. This is her first European start of the year and the trip should suit her. The ground is going to be a bit of question mark, but we feel she could be suited by it. If she can bring her form from Dubai to Europe, she is going to be a live contender.”
Six French fillies go to post, with the pick being Prix de Diane fourth Etoile who will likely set off as favourite after being beaten just a length by Channel at Chantilly in June. There are also a trio of Group 3 winners in Suphala, Cartiem and Platane.
Suphala, a daughter of Frankel, looked to be going the right way when landing the Group 3 Arqana Prix Chloe at Chantilly last time out and represents Andre Fabre who has already won this eight times, most recently with Tasaday in 2013.
