Stelvio just gets up to land Japanese Guineas trial
Report: Japan, Sunday
Nakayama: Fuji TV Sho Spring Stakes (Grade 2) 1m1f | turf | 3yo
Another compliment was paid to last year's champion two-year-old Danon Premium when Stelvio (Tetsuya Kimura/Christophe Lemaire), the colt he beat in the Asahi Hai Futurity, won the Spring Stakes.
Sent off 13-10 favourite in a 13-runner field for this 104 million yen (£700,000) contest, the son of Lord Kanaloa got up in the final stride to touch off Epoca D'Oro. He will now rejoin battle with Danon Premium in next month's Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2,000 Guineas).
Also on Sunday
Hanshin: Hanshin Daishoten (Grade 2) 1m7f | turf | 4yo+
Having raced at the rear, Rainbow Line (Hidekazu Asami/Yasunari Iwata) hit the front four wide on the final turn before winning by a a length and a half over Satono Chronicle with the favourite Clincher taking third. The Tenno Sho (Spring) at Kyoto on April 29 beckons for the winner.
