Rachel King set for spell on sidelines after breaking collarbone in mass fall
British jockey Rachel King is facing a spell out of the saddle after fracturing a collarbone in a mass fall at Tamworth in New South Wales on Sunday.
Less than 24 hours after riding in her first Newmarket Handicap, in which she partnered Encryption into seventh place in the sprint feature at Flemington on Saturday, King was one of five jockeys to come down in a 7f contest at Tamworth.
The Australian Jockeys Association reported fellow rider Wendy Peel had suffered a fractured shoulder in the fall, while Josh Adams has a lower spine fracture as well as a broke femur.
King's decision to leave Britain at the age of 23 more than five years ago to ride as an apprentice for Bart Cummings has paid off. After a two-month stint and brief trip home she returned to work for another legend of the Australian turf, Gai Waterhouse, and has been in the country ever since.
King has won three apprentice titles and is also a Group 1-winning rider courtesy of Maid Of Heaven's head success in the Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick in October.
She still regularly rides for Waterhouse and is also often seen in Godolphin's blue colours for Bart Cummings' grandson, James.
