Our experts highlight 25-1 and 14-1 outsiders for the Arc after eventful weekend

This weekend provided plenty of clues ahead of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on October 3. On Saturday, the Irish Champion Stakes and Cazoo St Leger featured some potential Longchamp contenders, while ante-post Arc favourite Snowfall suffered a shock defeat on Sunday. Three Racing Post experts share their Arc fancies and analyse the weekend's racing...

'Soft ground would suit two outsiders'

I can't fancy Snowfall any more. That defeat was sad to see and a big surprise, perhaps down to too many runs on fast ground.

Tarnawa, on the other hand, ran a super trial in the Irish Champion Stakes. I think there are other nations who would have overturned that result in the stewards' room, and she was a touch unlucky.

That race was miles better than the Vermeille, and Tarnawa has been aimed at the Arc all year.

I'll mention two others I like if the ground is soft – Raabihah, who returned to form last time, and Juddmonte International runner-up Alenquer.

'Tarnawa is the correct favourite – but don't dismiss this dark horse'

I tweeted before the Vermeille I thought Teona was the wrong price for the Arc and duly had a couple of quid on at 66-1, but if I am being honest I think she'll have a rather large task on to beat Tarnawa who, unlike Roger Varian's filly, won't mind testing conditions at Longchamp in October.

One horse's claims were boosted this weekend despite the fact she never left her box, however, and that horse is Chrono Genesis. She has been touted as Japan's number-one hope in the race this year yet their second seed, Deep Bond, showed he was by no means a forlorn hope by winning the Prix Foy.

Chrono Genesis is currently a 14-1 chance and that could look big if she acclimatises in the coming weeks.

It looks incredibly wide open. Snowfall had looked to be in a different division to the rest but her run in the Prix Vermeille certainly brought her back down to earth. The slowly run race did not suit her but that can often be the case in the Arc so suddenly there are some major doubts about her.

Tarnawa supporters must have been thrilled with her mighty run in the Irish Champion Stakes while Hurricane Lane is a horse I particularly like and he looks far classier than typical Leger winners.

Chrono Genesis is the one I like at the prices; her neck defeat to Mishriff in Dubai is a strong piece of form.
