More mature Waldgeist waltzes to Grand Prix de Chantilly victory

Guinness believe good things come to those who wait and Waldgeist's owner Dietrich von Boetticher is of a similar opinion regarding his four-year-old following a commanding victory in the Grand Prix de Chantilly.

Runner-up in last year's Prix du Jockey Club, and on the premises in several other good races, Waldgeist has taken his form to a new level this term.

A three-length win under Pierre-Charles Boudot in Sunday's Group 2 at Chantilly marked Waldgeist as a potential Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe contender, for which he is now a best-priced 20-1 (from 50).

Von Boetticher said: "Colts are like men, they take time to mature. Both horse and rider were confident and that's the best combination. We always have big dreams but we don't know the future."

While refusing to discuss specific targets for fear of inducing bad luck, Von Boetticher thinks Waldgeist is starting to blossom, and said: "I think this horse needed to be a four-year-old to show his full potential. I think he wasn't at his full powers at three."

Finsbury Square could be Royal Ascot-bound

A Momentofmadness attempted to make all under Derby hero William Buick in the Group 2 Prix du Gros-Chene, but Charlie Hills's runner faded to finish third as Finsbury Square powered clear for a commanding victory.

Third and second in the race when trained by Fabrice Chappet, Finsbury Square bettered those results with a first win for Mauricio Delcher-Sanchez.

The trainer has winning experience at Royal Ascot courtesy of Equiano's 2008 King's Stand Stakes victory and could be set for a return to the meeting with his six-year-old.

"He was taken out of the King's Stand but we might think about supplementing him for the Diamond Jubilee," said Delcher-Sanchez.

Hills was more than satisfied with A Momentofmadness's effort, and said: "We might try to find a Listed race from somewhere between now and Goodwood, where there's the Group 2 King George V Stakes.

"He's been improving as he's got older and today was probably the highest mark he's ever run to. He loves fast ground and William just felt it was a little tacky for him."

Finsbury Square's jockey Olivier Peslier completed a Group-race double with a confident ride aboard Pollara in the Group 3 Prix de Royaumont.

Not an impossible mission for Impassible in Sandringham

Mission Impassible put a difficult spring behind her to run out an impressive winner of the Group 2 Prix de Sandringham, holding the late challenge of Crown Walk.

Jean-Claude Rouget had entertained Classic hopes for Mission Impassible, but she had been unable to build on her fine third place in the Prix Marcel Boussac in two starts this term.

The trainer said: "I wouldn't usually run a filly in the Sandringham only three weeks after the Poule d'Essai, but she didn't really have a race there, having been blocked for the last 200 metres.

"She was a lot calmer than before her first two runs of the year and I think the decent rhythm of the race was important to her. The Diane and Ascot will come too quick, so she will be prepared for Deauville or perhaps Britain, where there is a good programme for fillies."
