Mondialiste and Suedois bid for Grade 1 glory in Shadwell Turf Mile
Preview: USA, Saturday 10.45pm BST (live on ATR)
Keeneland: Shadwell Turf Mile (Grade 1) 1m | turf | 3yo+
With only four weeks until the Breeders' Cup, it is another weekend of major trials for the two-day extravaganza at Del Mar on November 3-4.
With no fewer than 13 qualifiers as part of the Breeders' Cup 'win and you're in' challenge, there are Grade 1s at three different tracks, headed by the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland, which hosts its stakes-laden Fall Stars Weekend.
What is more, there is significant British interest in the $1 million event – an expenses-paid berth in the Breeders' Cup Mile is also on offer – with David O'Meara saddling both last year's Arlington Million winner Mondialiste (Fergal Lynch) and Suedois (Danny Tudhope), who notched a game victory in a Group 2 event at Leopardstown last month.
A maximum 14-runner field features several leading North American turf milers, among them last year's winner Miss Temple City (Graham Motion/Edgar Prado) and American Patriot (Todd Pletcher/Joe Bravo), who were both well beaten in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in the summer.
After a stop-start season, course specialist Miss Temple City – three times a Grade 1 winner – returned to winning ways last time out in lesser company at Kentucky Downs, but while American Patriot won the Maker's 46 Mile over course and distance in the spring, he has struggled since. He is also drawn wide in gate 14. Neither wants any give.
Front-running Heart To Heart (Brian Lynch/Florent Geroux) comes here in prime form after winning at Saratoga as he bids finally to land that elusive top-level victory. Divisidero (Buff Bradley/Julien Leparoux) already has two – the last two editions of the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic on Kentucky Derby day at Churchill Downs.
Ladbrokes: 7-2 Heart to Heart, 5 Miss Temple City, 6 Mondialiste, Suedois, 13-2 Divisidero, 9 Ballagh Rocks, 10 Offering Plan, 12 American Patriot, 20 Flatlined, 25 bar
>>Former Roger Charlton-trained Time Test was ruled out with a foot bruise and will not make the Breeders' Cup Mile.
Also on Saturday
Belmont Park: Jockey Club Gold Cup (Grade 1) 1m2f | dirt | 3yo+ (10.23pm BST, live on ATR)
Not the most exalted edition of this historic $750,000 contest, a 'win and you're in race' for the Breeders' Cup Classic and a nice opportunity for Keen Ice (Todd Pletcher/Jose Ortiz), notorious for his Travers Stakes defeat of American Pharoah after his Triple Crown sweep in 2015. The five-year-old, who usually finds one or two too good at the highest level, is one of three runners for his trainer, alongside Rally Cry and Destin.
Blinkers are added to Jim Dandy winner Good Samaritan (Bill Mott/Joel Rosario) after his lacklustre Travers effort; Pavel (Doug O'Neill/Mario Gutierrez) comes in off a six-length win at Parx.
Belmont Park: Champagne Stakes (Grade 1) 1m | dirt | 2yo (9.13pm BST, live on ATR)
Hazit (Todd Pletcher/John Velazquez), owned by a partnership involving Coolmore, makes his stakes debut in New York's most prestigious race for two-year-olds. Like that son of War Front, Godolphin's Enticed (Kiaran McLaughlin/Junior Alvarado) also won a Saratoga maiden.
Keeneland: First Lady Stakes (Grade 1) 1m | turf | 3yo+ f+m (9.35pm BST, live on ATR)
Connections of German-trained Delectation (Andreas Wohler/Eduardo Pedroza) are eager to secure a place in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
Likely favourite is Godolphin's Dickinson (Kiaran McLaughlin/Paco Lopez) loves this track, having won the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley over course and distance at the April meeting.
Keeneland: Breeders' Futurity (Grade 1) 1m½f | dirt | 2yo (10.10pm BST, live on ATR)
Free Drop Billy (Dale Romans/Robby Albarado) and Givemeaminit (Dallas Stewart/Brian Hernandez) were closely matched when second and third in Grade 1 company at Saratoga. They set the standard for Lone Sailor (Tom Amoss/Florent Geroux), an 11-length winner on sloppy dirt at the same venue.
Santa Anita: Santa Anita Sprint Championship (Grade 1) 6f | dirt | 3yo+ (11pm BST)
Roy H (Peter Miller/Kent Desormeaux) bids to turn the tables on Ransom The Moon (Phil d'Amato/Flavien Prat), who beat him in the Bing Crosby at Del Mar – but only after the runner-up had been severely hampered by the errant Drefong. Three-year-old American Anthem (Bob Baffert/Mike Smith) will be fancied to beat them.
