Marco Botti is no longer the family member with a Derby Italiano win missing from his CV after his Almanzor colt Molveno led home a family 1-2-3-4 at Capannelle in Rome on Monday.

Botti's father Alduino had trained four winners of Italy's biggest race, one of which came in conjunction with his uncle Giuseppe, while brother Stefano has enjoyed five victories and cousin Endo has been successful as a jockey and trainer.

Molveno, who had won three times on the all-weather over the winter and was last seen finishing second off a mark of 87 in a handicap on the first day of the Guineas meeting at Newmarket, struck for the Suffolk-based Botti in the 1m3f Group 2, coming from nowhere under Marco Ghiani to hit the front in the final few yards to pip Crazy Spirit and Lao Tzu, both trained by Stefano, with Klaynn in fourth for Endo.

"It's amazing to win the Italian Derby as an Italian," said Botti. "We'll have a good celebration after that and it was a great ride by Marco. I knew the trip wouldn't be an issue with the fast ground, and I'm delighted.

"He might not have a rating of 90 anymore, but for me it was all about finding the right horse for this race. As soon as he crossed the line I said sorry to my brother, but he's won this race quite a few times.

"This means a lot to all of us. Marco was quite emotional as he's Italian too and the Derby is the Derby. We'll celebrate this one."

The result comes as a huge confidence boost before stable star and Hong Kong Vase winner Giavellotto bids to give Botti a first domestic Group 1 success in the Coronation Cup at Epsom on Friday.

Tom Marquand finished sixth aboard the German-trained favourite Zauberkonig, while Andrew Balding's Our 'enery was last of the 18 runners under David Probert.
