Hannon trio chasing good prize-money on offer at San Siro
Richard Hannon missed out on the celebrations at Ascot on Saturday with no runners on British Champions Day but could still be among the Group-race winners this weekend as he sends a trio of runners to challenge for the three Group 2 races at San Siro in Italy on Sunday.
With more than £100,000 to the winner in each race, it could prove a lucrative jaunt for the Classic-winning trainer, whose St Leger sixth Raymond Tusk faces four rivals in the Gran Premio del Jockey Club Italiano (3.00).
"We won this race with Ventura Storm in 2016," said Hannon. "We thought Raymond was probably a little too far back in the St Leger and struggled to really land a blow. He still finished his race very well and this contest looks a suitable opportunity to gain some more valuable black type.
"He’s been in great form since Doncaster and arrives here in rude health."
Jamie Spencer partners Raymond Tusk for the first time and has also been booked for stablemates Leroy Leroy and Oh This Is Us.
Leroy Leroy takes a hike in class in the Gran Criterium (2.20) after landing a Doncaster nursery last month and Hannon said on his Unibet blog: "Leroy Leroy represents the same owners as Raymond Tusk, Middleham Park Racing, and was very impressive at Doncaster last time.
"This is a step up in grade but he put up a good performance that day and has come on plenty at home since."
Dual Listed winner Oh This Is Us bids for a breakthrough at Group level in the Premio Vittorio di Capua (3.45), in which his rivals include 2017 Sussex Stakes winner Here Comes When, trained by Andrew Balding.
Hannon said: "Oh This Is Us bids to cap a great season with success in a race I think he’ll be very competitive in."
Brits well represented at Chantilly
While Hannon will oversee his team in Italy, he is also among the British trainers with runners on Chantilly’s card on Sunday, transferred from Longchamp, with the track undergoing maintenance work.
His Supreme Stakes winner Anna Nerium is the only runner from Britain in the Listed Prix de Saint-Cyr (3.25) under Tom Marquand, while Mick Channon, Roger Varian and Roger Charlton all unleash runners in the Listed Prix Casimir Delamarre - Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage (3.55) for fillies and mares.
Charlton has snapped up Gerald Mosse for the ride on Savaanah, who was just touched off in a similar contest at Saint-Cloud last time. Varian runs the lightly-raced Qazyna and Channon saddles the Listed-placed five-year-old Summer Icon.
